The Nixon Library hosted this remarkable exhibit of twisted steel from the World Trade Center’s collapse on September 11, 2001. Also there was one of the NYFD firetrucks that brought first responding firemen
to the scene. I need not recount here the events of that tragic day; most of us know them. And there are no words. I need not recount the hearbreak of loss, or the soaring heroism of that day.
Besides, there are no words.
Rain had swept through earlier, and the skies were shaded in lead and pewter. As they should be.
When I reached out and touched the rusted steel rubble, it’s chill swept into me, and it was deathly quiet. And there are no words.
